NORMAL NERVE FUNCTION
Understanding normal nerve function in the foot is essential for maintaining proper sensation, motor control, and overall foot health as well as recognizing when there might be an issue arising.
The foot is a complex network of nerves that work together to transmit signals between the brain, spinal cord, and various structures in the foot. In a healthy foot, the nerves facilitate sensations such as touch, temperature, pain, and proprioception (awareness of body position). They enable us to perceive the ground beneath us, adjust our balance, and respond to potential hazards.
One of the primary signs of foot neuropathy is altered sensation. This can manifest as tingling, numbness, a “pins and needles” sensation, or a loss of sensation altogether. Patients may also experience heightened sensitivity to touch or an inability to discern temperature changes. These sensory abnormalities can increase the risk of injuries and wounds going unnoticed, potentially leading to complications such as ulcers or infections.
Proper nerve function in the foot is crucial for maintaining normal reflexes. Neuropathy can disrupt these reflexes, impairing the foot’s ability to respond appropriately to stimuli, such as the knee-jerk reflex. This can be observed during neurological examinations conducted by our team to help restore your feet to normal nerve function.
The Symptoms of Neuropathy
The symptoms of neuropathy can range from mild to severe, and can affect different parts of the body depending on which nerves are affected. If you have already been diagnosed with neuropathy, the following symptoms may sound familiar.
Some common symptoms include:
- Tingling or burning sensations
- Numbness
- Muscle Weakness
- Pain that can be sharp, stabbing, or throbbing
Neuropathy can also lead to complications such as foot ulcers, infections, and falls, particularly in elderly individuals. Treatment for neuropathy depends on the underlying cause and severity of the condition, and could include medications, physical therapy, and lifestyle changes such as exercise and diet modifications.
If you are suffering with neuropathy, there is hope! At Innovative Nerve & Joint Centers our treatment has a 93% success rate with no surgery, shots, or addictive and dangerous medications. Many of our patients have been able to stop their medications. We provide treatment options that are non-invasive with no side effects.
Radicular Pain in the Foot
Radicular pain in the foot can arise from various conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or even sciatica. It disrupts daily routines, hampers mobility, and robs people of their normal life.
Using manual adjustments, gentle spinal manipulations, and a range of specialized techniques, we aim to release the trapped nerves and promote healing in the affected area. Collaborating with our patients, we provide tailored treatment plans that combine chiropractic care, rehabilitative exercises, and lifestyle modifications to help you towards healing.
A PROVEN LONG-TERM SOLUTION FOR NEUROPATHY IN CHICAGO
There are several treatment options that can help alleviate the symptoms of neuropathy without the use of medication or surgery, including:
Physical Therapy: Exercises and physical therapy can help improve strength, balance, and coordination, which can reduce the risk of falls and injuries. Physical therapy can also help alleviate pain and discomfort by improving blood flow and promoting healing.
Acupuncture: Acupuncture involves inserting fine needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the nervous system and promote healing. Some studies have shown that acupuncture can help alleviate the symptoms of neuropathy.
Massage Therapy: Massage therapy can help improve circulation, reduce muscle tension, and alleviate pain and discomfort.
Vitamin B12: Studies have shown that Vitamin B12 can help treat the symptoms of neuropathy by reviving the nerves and developing myelination. For adults with neuropathy, you will typically need 1000 mcg daily over five days or 1000 mcg weekly over five weeks. Learn more about how Vitamin B12 can help treat neuropathy on our blog post. Lifestyle Modifications: Making changes to diet and exercise habits, quitting smoking, and reducing alcohol consumption can all help improve nerve function and reduce the risk of complications.

FAQs ABOUT NEUROPATHY
Does Neuropathy Go Away?
In some cases, such as when neuropathy is caused by a temporary illness or injury, the symptoms may go away on their own once the underlying condition is treated. For example, if neuropathy is caused by a vitamin deficiency, taking supplements may help alleviate the symptoms.
However, in many cases, neuropathy is caused by a chronic condition such as diabetes or an autoimmune disorder, and the symptoms may be permanent or require ongoing management. In such cases, the focus of treatment may be on managing the symptoms, preventing complications, and slowing down the progression of the condition. While there is no cure for neuropathy, with proper treatment and self-care measures, many individuals with neuropathy can lead full and active lives.
There are many people in the Chicago area who still suffer with peripheral neuropathy. In this day and age, there have been significant improvements in the pain management treatments we can offer. The past treatments for peripheral neuropathy revolved around medication, and many patients were left disappointed. It doesn’t have to be this way anymore.
Can You Have Neuropathy Without Diabetes?
Yes, it is possible to get neuropathy without having diabetes. Current estimates have 50% of diabetes caused by neuropathy, which means the other 50% is caused by something else. Neuropathy can be caused by a variety of factors, including autoimmune disorders, infections, exposure to toxins, certain medications, and hereditary factors. For example, autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and Sjogren’s syndrome can cause damage to the nerves and lead to neuropathy. Infections such as HIV, shingles, and Lyme disease can also cause neuropathy.
Exposure to toxins such as heavy metals or chemicals can cause nerve damage and lead to neuropathy. Certain medications such as chemotherapy drugs, antiretroviral drugs, and some antibiotics can also cause nerve damage and lead to neuropathy.
Additionally, some individuals may be genetically predisposed to neuropathy and may develop the condition, even in the absence of any other risk factors.
Is Medication The Best Way To Treat Neuropathy?
Medication can be very helpful for a number of things. The problem is that medication is not designed to correct the cause of the neuropathy, only to treat the symptoms. While it may help with the pain, the symptoms continue to progress. We know so much about the human body today. It’s time to move beyond treatments that mask your symptoms.
Our new peripheral neuropathy treatments succeed because we attack the problem at its source. Our combination of breakthrough technology along with advanced treatments provides your body with everything it needs to heal the damaged nerves. The majority of patients notice an improvement in their symptoms within their first few treatments.
