Care in Downers Grove

Alleviate pain and realize lifelong health and wellness Through Chiropractic care

Our bodies exist as the result of structure and function. In our office, we thoroughly examine both to identify the root cause of your pain and ultimately create a treatment program that addresses and corrects the source of the issue. This leads to not only a quicker improvement in pain but also a longer lasting change in how your body operates.

From a structural analysis perspective, understanding how the skeletal structure is aligned has huge implications on your health, just like the foundation and frame affects a building. Understanding the structure of the human body is vital to proper treatment and optimal outcomes. Dr. Fisher is the only Chiropractic Biophysics (CBP) Advanced Certified practitioner in Downers Gove, Illinois. CBP is the most researched, published chiropractic technique and is the only technique consistently shown to make structural changes to the spine.

Of course your body isn’t a building; it moves and has to move well. The way you move throughout the day and your activities (working out, playing with your kids or even sitting at your desk) is just as important. At Innovative Nerve & Joint Centers in Downers Grove, we perform a thorough analysis of how your body functionally moves to create an individualized treatment protocol for you.

What do we mean by “functionally moves”? An interesting example of this is that some patients can’t touch their toes bending over while standing, but can while sitting on the floor. This is one example and or evaluation that works to determine the cause and best treatment protocol for you. This is important, because while there are “good exercises”, not all exercises may be good for you. For example, as opposed to a generic workout program designed to improve your “core” we can design a program to work specifically in the areas of flexibility and stability so your body can move its best.

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens during your first visit to a chiropractor?

During the first visit, you'll meet with Dr. Fisher to discuss your health history and goals of care. Following that he'll perform an exam and any necessary x-rays. If needed, further imaging such as an MRI may be ordered. After reviewing your results, at the next visit he'll walk you through the findings and your treatment plan. Treatment typically consists of adjustments, therapeutic exercises, spinal remodeling, Class IV medical cold laser, or Shockwave therapy. Re-exams are done periodically to monitor progress.

Is chiropractic covered by insurance?

Yes, nearly all major medical insurances now cover chiropractic care. Benefits vary by provider — contact our office and we'll help you verify your coverage before your first visit.

How often should I go to a chiropractor?

It depends on what you're being treated for. Many high-level athletes see chiropractors regularly to maintain their health and performance. Our initial care plans typically range from 4 to 12 weeks, and after that some patients choose to continue on a maintenance schedule while others go about their lives feeling better than before. It's really a patient-by-patient decision based on your goals.

Why do chiropractors crack your back?

The "crack" — or adjustment, as chiropractors call it — is the sound of gases escaping from the spaces between the bones of your spine. While the audible sound isn't required for an effective adjustment, it frequently happens. What Dr. Fisher is doing when he adjusts you is stimulating the nerves, removing adhesions, and improving motion. The result is relaxed surrounding muscles, local pain relief, and improved range of motion.

Is it bad to crack your own back or neck?

If you're moving within the normal range of motion for your body and not overly stressing anything, most likely not. Where it becomes problematic is when people force themselves into odd positions or push the body too far. One thing to avoid entirely: never let someone walk on your back. This can be very dangerous and lead to broken ribs.

Why do I feel sore after an adjustment?

This typically happens because the area being adjusted hasn't moved normally in some time. It's very similar to starting a workout routine after a long break — some soreness is a normal part of the process. It usually resolves quickly and diminishes as care progresses.

What's the difference between a chiropractor and a physical therapist?

The biggest difference is the adjustment, which is unique to chiropractic and allows for the restoration of normal motion between the bones of the spine. Many chiropractors also perform exercise therapy programs and use passive pain relief modalities similar to what you'd see in a PT office. Where our practice differs from both physical therapy and most chiropractic offices is that Dr. Fisher practices Chiropractic Biophysics — the only technique consistently shown to make measurable structural changes to the spine using specific spinal remodeling techniques.
